One of the downsides of doing a PhD is not having time or energy to read anything other than research-related books. My day was packed with books about type and lettering, pubs, London history, culture and social commodities, ceramics, corporate identity, graphic design history, and methodology. There was no time for fiction and no mental space for any non-fiction that didn’t relate to any of those topics. Women, feminism, queerness, cycling, swimming, they were all relegated to a corner in my room. Even type design books that are outside of my topic.
That changed about a year ago, I had covid, then I had long covid, and then I had time. The first weeks, I couldn’t even read, but once I got energy, I read a book, then another one, then one more. And I couldn’t stop it.
